Pokemon: A PSA 10 Mudkip Promo Sells for US$3.72 Million

Welcome back to This Week in the TCG World, our weekly roundup of the stories that matter to collectors. Each edition covers the biggest moves across Pokemon, Magic, Yu-Gi-Oh, One Piece, sports cards and the grading industry. A 2015 Art Academy Daisuke Ochiai promo Mudkip from the XY era, graded PSA 10, sold for US$3.72 million in Fanatics Collect's September Premier Auction, per Sports Illustrated on September 27. SI calls it the single most valuable Mudkip collectible of all time by a significant margin: exactly 100 copies of the promo exist, and only three have ever received a PSA 10. The previous Mudkip high was a PSA 10 Gold Star Mudkip from 2004's EX Team Rocket Returns, which fetched US$1.02 million at a Fanatics Weekly auction, after no Gold Star Mudkip had ever sold above US$70,000.

This is the same Fanatics auction that closed Cooper Flagg's US$8.04 million sale, which we covered last edition, and SI notes the Mudkip went mostly unnoticed because of the number of heavy hitters in other lots. The lesson for Australian collectors is less about Mudkip and more about population: with only three copies at the top grade, the difference between a 10 and a 9 on a card like this is the whole story, and that difference comes down to corners, edges and surface.

One Piece: The OP14 Dracule Mihawk Leader Is Banned From October 12

The One Piece Card Game announced on September 24 that OP14-020 Dracule Mihawk will be banned from October 12, per the game's official English site. The notice says certain combinations involving the card became more powerful than anticipated, and that it significantly restricts the viability of Leader cards with the Slash attribute and severely harms the diversity of Leader selection. As a replacement, a new promotional Leader, P-163 Dracule Mihawk, with revised card text, will be distributed at future events.

A banned Leader leaves competitive decks in one go, and those copies usually head into a binder or a box rather than the bin. If you are retiring a Mihawk from play, it is worth checking what shape it is in before it goes into storage, since a card that saw a season of shuffling rarely comes out of a deck box looking the way it went in.

Lorcana: Hyperia City Revealed as Ravensburger Confirms Its First Serialised Cards

Disney Lorcana revealed a new set, Hyperia City, on September 22, with prerelease events from October 16 and a full release on October 23, per the official Disney Lorcana site. The set adds a new mechanic called ink drops, a counter that gives players a one-time-use ink to spend on playing cards from their hand or potentially empowering other cards, and brings in glimmers from Disney and Pixar's Coco.

The bigger news for collectors came alongside it. Collector Boosters debut with the Into the Inkdark set in the first quarter of 2027, each holding 12 randomised cards of all rarities, and each set will have six Illustrious rares available only in Collector Boosters, serialised to just 23 copies each, per Star City Games and the official announcement. They are the first serialised cards in the game's history. Ravensburger also confirmed an official Lorcana digital client is in development for desktop and mobile, with no release timeline yet. A card numbered one of 23 is exactly the kind of pull that deserves a sleeve and a toploader before it leaves the table.

Local Scene: Star Wars: Unlimited Pushes Homeworlds Back a Week in Australia

Fantasy Flight Games announced on September 25 that issues with its manufacturing partner have delayed the Star Wars: Unlimited Homeworlds set, per the official Star Wars: Unlimited site. Australia and New Zealand are the only region with new official dates: prerelease moves from October 2 to October 15, and the full release from October 9 to October 16. "This is the first time we have missed a release date for our mainline product," the company wrote. Other regions keep the original dates but face delays on some products, from Carbonite Boosters alone in the UK to Standard Boosters, Carbonite Boosters, Pre-Release Boxes and Spotlight Decks in markets including Singapore and Malaysia.

For Australian players with prerelease events booked for early October, it is worth checking with your local store before the weekend, since the new dates come from Fantasy Flight rather than individual shops. A late set is a short wait; the product itself is the same when it lands.

Sports Cards: Panini Signs a Minor League Deal With MLB Players, Inc.

Panini and MLB Players, Inc. announced a non-exclusive, multi-year agreement on September 28 covering every active Minor League Baseball player, per Yahoo Sports. The first release under the deal is 2026 Three and Two Baseball, scheduled for November, and Panini said it could release as many as 12 products a year featuring Minor League players alongside collegiate and retired players, with Prizm Baseball and Donruss Elite Extra Edition among the brands expected to benefit. "Having Minor League players within the scope of this agreement creates significant depth across Panini's baseball portfolio," Panini America CEO Mark Warsop said.

The deal does not give Panini Major League Baseball's league licence or rights to MLB team names, logos and uniforms, and Fanatics Collectibles and Topps remain the major fully licensed players in baseball cards, per Yahoo Sports. For Australian collectors who chase prospects, it means more cards of the same young players across more brands, and a prospect card only holds its value into a player's rookie season if it gets there in the same condition it left the pack.

That Is the Week

Five stories, one theme: how many exist, and when they arrive. A Mudkip with a population of three set a record, Lorcana capped its new chase cards at 23 copies, a One Piece leader was pulled from play and replaced, Homeworlds slipped a week on local shelves, and Panini opened the door to a lot more prospect cards. Whatever your collection is heading towards next, a submission, a sale or just a shelf, the state a card is in when it gets there is the part you control. If a card in your collection needs professional attention before it faces a grader or a buyer, that is exactly what the Lab is for.
