Pokemon: A Trophy Pikachu Draws a US$2.2 Million Bid Before the Hammer Falls
Welcome back to This Week in the TCG World, our weekly roundup of the stories that matter to collectors. Each edition covers the biggest moves across Pokemon, Magic, Yu-Gi-Oh, One Piece, sports cards and the grading industry. The headline lot in Goldin's 2026 Pokemon 30th Anniversary auction is a PSA 8 1997 Japanese promo Gold 1st Place 1st Tournament #1 Trophy Pikachu, and it already has a US$2,225,000 bid as of October 10, about US$2.71 million with Goldin's 22% buyer's premium, per Polkastarter. The card had drawn 29 bids since pre-bidding began on October 6, and the auction closes on October 25 US time.
For context, a 1998 Bronze 3rd Place 3rd Tournament Trophy Pikachu sold for US$1,769,000 in May, which Star City Games reports set the record for the highest public sale of any Trophy Pikachu card. A bid is not a sale, and the final price is only set when the auction closes, so treat every figure here as a number that can still move. What will not move is the card itself, and the PSA 8 on its label is a statement about its condition.

Sports Cards: A PSA 8 Tom Brady Rookie Numbered to 100 Sells for US$854,000
A 2000 Playoff Contenders Championship Ticket Auto Tom Brady, numbered to 100 and graded PSA 8, sold for US$854,000 at Goldin on October 14, topping Sports Illustrated's list of the five biggest football card sales for October 11 to 17. Second on the list was a 2025 Panini Authentically Shield Auto 1/1 Patrick Mahomes, ungraded in a Panini holder, which sold for US$500,218 at Goldin on October 17. According to the Goldin listing, SI reports, it is the only autographed version of a game-used NFL shield patch card ever.
Third was a 2017 National Treasures Patch Auto numbered to 5 Mahomes, BGS 8 with a 10 autograph grade, at US$225,000 on eBay on October 15. A 1998 SkyBox Metal Universe Precious Metal Gems Barry Sanders numbered to 50 and graded PSA 9 sold for US$96,380 at Goldin on October 17, which SI calls the fourth-highest price ever paid for a Barry Sanders card. For Australian collectors, the Brady is a neat reminder that an 8 can still be a six-figure card when the card itself is scarce, and that condition is what the grade on the slab describes.

Local Scene: TCGplayer Opens Its US Marketplace to Australian Buyers
TCGplayer announced on October 7 that Australian customers can shop its US marketplace from that day, timed with PAX Australia, which it calls the country's largest annual gaming and fandom event. Eligible TCGplayer Direct singles ship with tracked international shipping, and applicable Australian GST is collected at checkout, per the company's press release. TCGplayer cites Circana data showing Strategic Trading Card Games were the largest dollar and unit gaining sector in the first half of 2026, and says its unique app users in Australia have increased more than 50% since February 2026.
The release does not state a currency, so check the checkout total before you commit to a purchase. Buying singles from overseas also means taking a seller's word on condition, and a card that arrives in worse shape than its listing is a problem you now have to solve from the other side of the world. Look closely at photos, ask about edges and surface, and keep the packaging when a card arrives.

Magic: Some Star Trek Products Will Reach Asia-Pacific After the Tabletop Release
Wizards of the Coast posted on October 16 that, due to production and shipping issues, select Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek products may arrive later than expected. Play Boosters and Prerelease Packs are on track for availability during Prerelease and release events, which the post lists as November 6 and November 13. In Asia-Pacific, Collector Boosters, Omega Collector Boosters (single units at larger retailers), Bundles, Beam Me Up Bundles and Draft Night are listed as arriving after the tabletop release date.
The post does not name Australia on its own, so the Asia-Pacific list is the closest guide we have. Wizards calls the delays "fluid" and advises checking with a local game store or retailer for availability. Reveals for the set begin on October 20, per Wizards, with previews continuing on weekdays and the full card gallery due on October 30. If you have a Collector Booster pre-order, ask your store now rather than on release day.

Section 5
Magic: Marvel: Darkhold Destiny Is the First Universes Beyond Set With an Original Story
Wizards revealed Marvel: Darkhold Destiny at New York Comic Con, per Gamingtrend on October 9. It is described as the first Universes Beyond set built around an original story and setting, a brand-new storyline in the Marvel Universe that spans nearly 30 dimensions, with Doctor Strange, Thor, Hela and Dormammu as its four main characters. A tie-in comic arrives the week of the set's launch, which Gamingtrend dates to April 7, 2027.
That is still around six months away, and we found nothing on Australian pricing or availability, so there is nothing to act on yet. When previews begin, the thing to watch is how many of the set's chase cards are signed, serialised or foil, because those are the ones that tend to need the most careful handling from the moment they leave the pack.

That Is the Week
Five stories, one theme: getting from there to here. A Trophy Pikachu is still being bid on, a Brady rookie has already crossed the line, TCGplayer will now post cards to Australia, some Star Trek boxes are running late and Darkhold Destiny is months away. Whatever your collection is heading towards next, a submission, a sale or just a shelf, the state a card is in when it gets there is the part you control. If a card in your collection needs professional attention before it faces a grader or a buyer, that is exactly what the Lab is for.
